Daniel Has Career Goals at Penske—and a Path to Achieve Them

Daniel enjoyed fixing things, but he wasn’t sure how to parlay that interest into a sustainable career pathway.

“I was struggling to find a career—financing it, seeing the training through all the way,” he told Social Finance in 2021.

Things changed for Daniel when he learned about American Diesel Training Centers (ADTC), an Ohio-based school that prepares people for careers as diesel mechanics—an in-demand occupation facing labor shortages across the country. Through a student-friendly financing model called the Career Impact Bond in partnership with Social Finance, learners like Daniel could enroll in ADTC’s five-week training program and pay for the schooling only if it landed him a job.

Soon, Daniel was enrolled at ADTC. To his surprise, he began to receive job offers from local companies before he even started training. “I had an offer from a bus metro company … almost a week before I even got to Ohio. I hadn’t even gone through the training, I wasn’t certified yet, and they already wanted me. That was the moment I knew: this is the real deal.”

Three weeks after graduating from the program, Daniel accepted a job with Penske. He began to do preventative maintenance inspections and small repairs, with ample opportunity to learn and grow into a more advanced role. For the first time in a long time, he has solid career goals—he wants to become a level-one Penske technician within five years—and a pathway to achieve them.
