A Zero-Interest Living Expense Loan Helped Dometrius Start a New Career

Impact Investments, Workforce & Economic Mobility

After being released from prison in 2020, Dometrius bounced between dead-end jobs. He wanted a career with stability and growth potential, but he was having trouble getting his foot in the door.

The Master’s Apprentice, a pre-apprenticeship program in Denver, CO, gave him the opportunity he needed. Dometrius enrolled in the six-week program after hearing about it from a friend. A zero-interest living expense loan, offered through the Colorado Pay It Forward Fund, helped him remain financially stable throughout the full-time program.

“Training with The Master’s Apprentice took up almost all of my time Monday through Friday,” said Dometrius. “The loan helped with my finances, so I was able to focus on learning. I don’t know where I would be without it.”

While in the program, Dometrius was introduced to a variety of trades through field visits showcasing the different industries. He also received instruction in math and — for the first time in his life — financial literacy. He appreciated how these courses set him up for success after graduation.

As part of training, The Master’s Apprentice matches participants with local employers for mock interviews. Dometrius made an impression during his mock interview with Murphy Mechanical, a mechanical contracting firm. This introduction opened the door for a real interview, a job offer, and acceptance into a union apprenticeship program.

Dometrius is excited to dive into his apprenticeship and learn more about plumbing. In the next five years, he plans to complete his apprenticeship and earn his journeyman’s license. One day, he would like to open his own business as a journeyman plumber.

“I definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to find their way to a career but doesn’t know where to start,” said Dometrius. “I was able to find my way back into society, and it was a blessing.”
