Impact Measurement & Management (IMM) and Evaluation

Our Approach

Social Finance helps foundations and impact investors build practical, streamlined systems for impact measurement and management (IMM) and reporting. We evaluate the impact associated with impact investments, so that mission-driven investors can use insights surfaced to build buy-in for and enhance their impact investing practice. We also help impact investing clients communicate their impact to investors, staff, investees, community members, field-leaders, and other stakeholders.

Our approach is grounded in our hands-on experience as impact investors and our expertise in measurement and evaluation, and it is bolstered by our in-house data and analytics team. We couple a practitioner’s pragmatism with credible evaluation to help clients understand and improve the impact of their investments. Our work is accessible, useful, and grounded.

Social Finance is a national nonprofit and registered investment adviser (SF Advisers, LLC).

Our Services

  • Impact Measurement and Management Framework Development: We help organizations articulate shared vision and goals for impact, then translate that vision into a practical tools (including accessible IMM frameworks, data collection tools, key performance indicators and tracking systems, and data dashboards) that staff understand, trust, and use to inform decision-making.
  • Impact Rating & Scorecard Design: We design impact ratings and scorecards that embed impact considerations into investment, lending, and program decisions.
  • Impact Evaluation & Assessment: Our team designs and conducts mixed-methods, equity-centered evaluations. These assessments include: document review, impact and financial analysis at the deal- and portfolio levels, investee interviews, focus groups, facilitated sensemaking sessions, and/or reporting. Our evaluations both assess the outcomes of impact investments and surface recommendations for enhancing practice.
  • Data Systems, Dashboards & Reporting: Our in-house data and analytics team builds streamlined data collection tools and dashboards that track financial, social, and environmental outcomes at the fund and investee levels. This makes it easier for clients to report on, and improve, impact performance.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Field-Building: We help clients report and communicate impact to staff, boards, investors, investees, community members, and field-leaders through staff engagement, facilitated workshops, and field-building materials.

Social Finance Impact First Fund

Social Finance designed and implemented impact diligence, IMM, and reporting for its Impact First Fund. The team developed an investment philosophy, an impact theory of change; impact due diligence protocols and an impact scorecard that inform decision-making, and dashboards that track financial, social, and environmental outcomes at the Fund and investee level.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Social Finance led a strategic evaluation that assessed how RWJF’s 42+ years of impact investing advanced racial- and health-equity, catalyzed impact investment, and led to systems-level changes in the way impact investments are made and resourced. We made a series of forward-looking recommendations that capitalize on RWJF’s successes, enhance and simplify IMM, and enhance impact.

Housing Trust Silicon Valley

Social Finance was selected to design an organization-wide IMM framework for Housing Trust Silicon Valley, a CDFI focused on affordable housing and housing justice. Our work includes helping the team to develop a clear mission statement for impact, theory of change, KPIs, and an impact scorecard to inform Housing Trust’s lending and program decisions.

Our thanks to the Social Finance Team and the consultants with whom they partnered for their mindful approach, thoughtful analysis, and actionable synthesis of the learnings to inform our work and the work of others.
