Social Finance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing capital to drive social progress. We bring uncommon partners together around a common purpose: to measurably improve the lives of those in need.
Through a set of innovative financing strategies called Pay for Success (PFS), we work to disrupt the status quo, shifting mindsets to align resources with impact. The core principles of PFS provide the foundation for this work: clearly defined outcomes, data-driven decisions, uncommon cross-sector partnerships, strong governance and accountability, and catalytic capital to drive impact. PFS strategies include social impact bonds, career impact bonds, and outcomes rate cards.
Our sister organization, Social Finance UK, launched the world’s first Social Impact Bond in 2010. The Social Finance Global Network, which now includes Social Finance UK, Social Finance US, Social Finance Israel, Social Finance India, and Social Finance Netherlands, has been integral in transforming social impact bonds from a nascent idea into a vibrant international movement.
Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Social Finance UK, David Blood, Sir Ronald Cohen, and Tracy Palandjian founded Social Finance US in January 2011 to bring social impact bonds to the United States.
In December 2013, Social Finance, Center for Employment Opportunities, and the State of New York launched the first state-led social impact bond, to increase employment and improve public safety in New York City and Rochester, NY. Since that time, we have launched eight social impact bonds across the country and expanded the Pay for Success model to include outcomes rate cards and career impact bonds.
Pay for Success sits at the intersection of impact investing and evidence-based policy. Our advisory services team engages with state and local governments, foundations, and nonprofits to use the full suite of Pay for Success tools to address chronic social challenges. In addition to our social investment and advisory work, we work to advance the Pay for Success field through market education, publications, research and analysis.
