Scaling Nonprofit Impact with Support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation

The Social Finance Institute, Children & Families, Education

Highlights

4Nonprofits, all funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, are using the principles of Pay for Success to prepare for growth

Making the shift to results-oriented funding requires new investments for nonprofits: investments in program consistency and quality, data systems, evaluations, and performance management. Often, those organizations with the capacity to credibly articulate their social and economic value to government decision makers will receive meaningful government funding.

Working with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and four of its grantees, Social Finance explored how nonprofits can prepare themselves—and their data, evidence, and outcomes—for this future. The ensuing report, “New Tools to Amplify Impact: A Pay for Success Guide to Building Nonprofit Capacity,” is a how-to guide for nonprofits seeking to use the tools of Pay for Success to assess their own capacity and craft a compelling social and economic case for their programs in the eyes of government funders.

Goals

  • Help nonprofits navigate Pay for Success tools to build their capacity to track and measure outcomes and become better advocates for themselves in conversations with the public sector.
  • Guide funders as they consider new ways to support their grantees and spark novel conversations with governments.
  • Shed light on ways to achieve sustainable funding at scale—one of the most difficult challenges in the social sector.

Performance-based funding in its own right is important. But directing that funding to organizations with the best evidence and ability to grow—to what works—is better still.
