Loan Repayment Information

Thank you for participating in this program! All loan repayments that you make are recycled so that the NJ Pay It Forward Program can provide loans, living stipends, one-time financial assistance, and mental health support to future students like you.

Who is my loan servicer and what do they do?

MOHELA is the loan servicer for the NJ Pay It Forward student loans, handling the billing of your NJ Pay It Forward student loan at no cost to you. If you have questions about your loan or need help navigating the repayment process, please contact MOHELA.

What do I need to do?

Create an Account with MOHELA	Create an account here.
Update Your Information	Confirm that your information, including contact information and household size, is up to date on your MOHELA portal. You can log in to your account at any time here.
Enroll in Auto Pay (recommended)	Enroll in Auto Pay to ensure you never miss a loan payment and avoid any potential negative impacts on your credit score. Additionally, when you enroll in Auto Pay, you will receive a one-time $100.00 credit applied to your principal balance of your loan. To enroll in Auto Pay, visit the MOHELA borrower portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com. Once you log in, select Auto Pay on the “Payment Tools” tab to enroll. Note: In order to have the $100 credit applied, you must make three (3) successful consecutive Auto Pay monthly payments.
Upload Income Documentation	To upload income documentation, log into the MOHELA borrower portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com and navigate to the “Upload Documents” page. You must submit either documentation of your income or proof of unemployment benefits before the end of the 90-day grace period following your training exit date, and every three months thereafter. Additionally, you must submit documentation whenever you experience a change in income during your loan repayment period. Acceptable forms of documentation include: Paystub or wage statement W2 form Tax filings Bank statements Employer letter verifying employment and income Proof of receiving unemployment benefits Signed and notarized attestation of unemployment Only one of the above documents needs to be provided.
Make a Payment	If you’re enrolled in Auto Pay, make sure your linked bank account has sufficient funds on each payment due date. If you’re not enrolled in Auto Pay, you can make a payment via your MOHELA portal.  Login here.

What if I am unemployed or employed below the Minimum Income Threshold?

You must upload income documentation and apply for unemployment/underemployment deferment via your MOHELA portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com.

You must provide acceptable documentation demonstrating that your income is below the Minimum Income Threshold or proof of unemployment (such as unemployment benefits). If you do so, your monthly repayment will be $0.

If you don’t take any action, you will be obligated to make repayments on your loan as if you are making above the Minimum Income Threshold.

How is the Minimum Income Threshold calculated?

The Minimum Income Threshold (MIT) is calculated as:

150% of US Federal Poverty Level + $12,000 = MIT

How is my monthly repayment amount calculated?

The table below shows estimated monthly payment obligations based on household size as of March 2025.

Your monthly repayment will be 10% of your “Discretionary Income,” which is the $ amount of income you earn above 150% of the Federal Poverty Level for your household size. 

10% x 150% of US Federal Poverty Level = Repayment Amount

If you earn less than the Minimum Income Threshold or are unemployed, you are eligible to apply for unemployment/underemployment deferment. During the deferment period, your monthly payment will be $0. 

How do I know how many people are in my household size?

Your household includes you, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependents, excluding roommates. Your household size will impact the amount you must repay towards your NJ Pay It Forward loan every month.

You must update your household size whenever it changes by visiting your MOHELA portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com.

What if I can’t make my payment?

There are several deferment and forbearance options available to you, which can keep you in good standing during temporary hardships. To learn more about your deferment and forbearance options, contact MOHELA directly at 888-212-5908 (Toll Free) between the hours of 8am – 9pm ET Monday through Thursday and 8am – 6pm ET on Friday or visit their website.

What do I need to repay?

The NJ Pay It Forward loan has a 0% interest rate and no fees, so you will only repay the amount you borrowed. Your maximum repayment duration is five years, but you can pay off your loan(s) early without any penalty.

You will not have to repay the living stipends, one-time financial assistance, or the cost of any mental health services you have received.

Supportive Services

Living Stipend Grant

All NJ Pay It Forward students are eligible to receive a living stipend grant, up to $500 per month for students enrolled in full-time training programs and $375 per month for students enrolled in part-time training programs.

On your loan application, you selected whether you would like to opt-in or opt-out to the living stipend grant. If you need to change your election, fill out the form linked here.

One-Time Financial Assistance

Each NJ Pay It Forward student is eligible to receive up to $3,000 in one-time financial assistance (not to be repaid) per academic year if they are currently enrolled in training and are experiencing financial difficulties. Students can request up to $1,000 in assistance at a time. Examples of situations where one-time financial assistance may be able to help include:

Difficulty covering transportation or housing expenses.
Issues with acquiring necessary tools, equipment, or materials for your training.
Unexpected personal or family emergencies affecting your finances.

BetterHelp Mental Health Services

All current NJ Pay It Forward students can receive up to three months, or 12 sessions, of virtual mental health services, including counseling, through BetterHelp at no cost. Students can also access asynchronous messaging with their therapist throughout their three-month membership.
