What if I am unemployed or employed below the Minimum Income Threshold?
You must upload income documentation and apply for unemployment/underemployment deferment via your MOHELA portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com.
You must provide acceptable documentation demonstrating that your income is below the Minimum Income Threshold or proof of unemployment (such as unemployment benefits). If you do so, your monthly repayment will be $0.
If you don’t take any action, you will be obligated to make repayments on your loan as if you are making above the Minimum Income Threshold.
How is the Minimum Income Threshold calculated?
How is my monthly repayment amount calculated?
The table below shows estimated monthly payment obligations based on household size as of March 2025.

Your monthly repayment will be 10% of your “Discretionary Income,” which is the $ amount of income you earn above 150% of the Federal Poverty Level for your household size.
10% x 150% of US Federal Poverty Level = Repayment Amount
If you earn less than the Minimum Income Threshold or are unemployed, you are eligible to apply for unemployment/underemployment deferment. During the deferment period, your monthly payment will be $0.
How do I know how many people are in my household size?
Your household includes you, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependents, excluding roommates. Your household size will impact the amount you must repay towards your NJ Pay It Forward loan every month.
You must update your household size whenever it changes by visiting your MOHELA portal at njpayitforward.mohela.com.
What if I can’t make my payment?
There are several deferment and forbearance options available to you, which can keep you in good standing during temporary hardships. What do I need to repay?
The NJ Pay It Forward loan has a 0% interest rate and no fees, so you will only repay the amount you borrowed. Your maximum repayment duration is five years, but you can pay off your loan(s) early without any penalty.
You will not have to repay the living stipends, one-time financial assistance, or the cost of any mental health services you have received.
